Wind UpliftWind uplift test data
When porcelain pavers are installed on a pedestal system, they essentially rely on gravity, tight spacing between the pavers and tight containment around the perimeter to keep the pavers in place without movement. The open joint space between pavers allows wind to flow above, below and around the deck surface, which also tends to reduce uplift forces somewhat.
At the present time, the only official test procedure known to Architrex relating to wind uplift of roofing products is the Florida Building Code 2007 TAS 108 Test Procedure for testing air permeable rigid discontinuous roof systems. Whilst this test procedure may have some relevance to pavers installed in ‘floating’ deck applications, Architrex engaged the Florida International University Hurricane Research Center to independently evaluate the resistance of 24″ x 24″ porcelain pavers to wind uplift using their Wall of Wind facility under a series of specifically designed test conditions.
The test program was intended to provide practical information on the wind speed at which uplift of Architrex ¾” thick porcelain pavers installed on fixed or adjustable height pedestals, may occur. Variables incorporated in the test program included:
- wind angles
- pedestal heights and type
- parapet wall height
- paver layout
- locking devices along the parapet walls
For each configuration, the wind speed was increased in 10 mph increments until either blowoff occurred or the maximum wind speed of the Wall of Wind facility (approximately 150 mph) was reached. To put this into context, the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale which is a 1 to 5 rating based on a hurricane’s sustained wind speed, defines wind speeds over 74 mph to be hurricane velocity where:
- Category 1 (74-95mph) – ‘Very dangerous winds will produce some damage’
- Category 2 (96-110 mph) – ‘Extremely dangerous winds will cause extensive damage’
- Category 3 (111-129 mph) – ‘Devastating damage will occur’.
In the western North Pacific, the term “super typhoon” is used for tropical cyclones with sustained winds exceeding 150 mph.
Whilst the full Wall of Wind test report should be consulted for details of both the test procedure and results obtained for each set of variables, it was found that the wind speed at which blow off of ¾” thick 24” x 24” Architrex porcelain pavers installed on fixed height pedestals and 45° wind angle was:
- 130 mph with no parapet
- 150 mph with 12” high parapet

None of the information contained in this report is intended to substitute for the engineer’s, specifier’s, architect’s, builder’s or contractor’s own analysis, investigation, and due diligence regarding the appropriate choice, application and installation of ¾” thick porcelain pavers on fixed or adjustable height pedestals in any particular location or application, which is not the responsibility of Architrex.
