Snow Melt InstallationHow to install the Heatizon snow melt system
The Heatizon snowmelt system can be used under practically any pedestal supported deck surfaced with unit pavers – porcelain, stone or concrete. It can be installed during new construction or can be retrofitted to an existing paver installation. The basic requirement is a clearance of at least 1.75″ from the underside of the pavers to the substrate to accommodate the insulation layer and ensure good drainage under the pavers.
Each Heatizon snow melt system is custom designed based on drawings submitted to us. Be sure to follow the installation layout design provided for your specific project. A typical paver and cable layout design will look like the drawing below.
Firstly, place the pedestals over the deck surface, positioned at the required separation for the specific pavers to be installed. Note that only one row of pavers should be installed at a time to allow access for laying the cables.
Place the aluminum brackets which serve as support for the polyurethane foam sheet on the head of each pedestal so they span an adjacent pedestal.
Lay the polyurethane foam sheets over the brackets.
Lay the aluminum trays over the foam sheet with the channels for the heating element all aligned in the same direction.
Start the run of cable where specified on the layout provided for your project. Lay the Hott-Wire MI Cable in each channel and tape the cable in place with the heavy duty aluminum tape provided, running the full length of the area to be heated and looping back the cable at the end of the paved area via the adjacent channel. Bend the cable to create a return at the outside of specific heating zones, or before reaching a perimeter wall and from one row of pavers to the next.
Carefully place the pavers on top of the tray assembly, making sure all heating cables are secured tightly in the channels.
Where heating cable turns are made adjacent to a wall or where a partial paver is used, the tray must be cut 5” shorter than the paver to allow for turns to be made. Do not allow the heating cables to touch the membrane on a roof deck, they must be free and open to air. Always use a bracket to support the tray when spanning across pedestals.
PVC jacketed copper sheath cold leads exit the tray assembly as specified on the installation layout diagram and run to the controller/relay panel. Make sure to follow local building codes when running conductors where conduit may be required as a sleeve.
Typically the snow melt system will be operated by a controller which activates heating when moisture is detected and the temperature is below a selectable set point in the range 34° – 44° F . The controller will typically provide an adjustable delay off cycle, either 30-90 minutes or 2-6 hours.
